Simbu is devoting himself completely for this Tamil remake of Bollywood blockbuster film 'Dabangg' which had Salman Khan playing the lead. The Hindi original had a blast at the box-office becoming the biggest entertainer of the year, and Simbu too is giving the Tamil counterpart his all to make 'Osthi' as successful as 'Dabangg' was in Hindi.

Simbu will be Vel Murugan, a cop with oodles of attitude. He will be speaking Tirunelveli dialect in the film. For sporting a sleek physique which the film demands, Simbu is hitting the gym regularly for that sculpted look. Directed by Dharani, the film has a host of other popular stars in prominent roles. Revathi will be seen playing Simbu's mom. Richa Gangopadhyay will play Simbu's love interest; 'Jithan' Ramesh will play Simbu's brother.

Sonu Sood who played baddie in the Hindi original will be clashing with Simbu in the Tamil version too. Music will be composed by Thaman. Simbu has crooned for a song in this film which the actor has claimed will be loved by ladies.

'Dabangg' in Hindi had Salman Khan in the lead with Sonakshi Sinha playing the female lead. This was also Sonakshi's launch pad as heroine in Bollywood. It is just a matter of time to see if 'Osthi' will repeat the history created by 'Dabangg' in Bollywood!

Expectations are obviously high on 'Rowthiram', for it is Jiiva's very next offering after the blockbuster 'Ko'. Does the movie directed by newcomer Gokul live up to all hype? Partly yes is the answer that comes from the heart, though the mind refuses to accept it.

The film begins on a brisk note and falls flat as it progresses. The big saving grace is Jiiva's teriffic screen presence and his commendable performance. Gokul has ensured that the movie is loud and clear- portraying Jiiva as an angry young man.

The film starts in the 1980s. A young Shiva (Jiiva) is taught by his grandfather (Prakash Raj) to be bold and brave and fight against all odds, especially all that's evil. Shiva grows up with his grandfather's words as the Bible.

However, Shiva's parents (Jayaprakash and Lakshmi) want him to lead a peaceful life. Enters Priya (Shriya), a law college student. She is the daughter of a police official (Babu Antony). Obviously it's romance between the young man and the woman.

Meanwhile, Shiva is forced to earn the wrath of a goon (Ganesh Acharya) and also he crosses swords with another baddie called Gowri. The rest, which is supplemented by electrifying stunt sequences, is about how Shiva emerges victor against all odds.

Jiiva carries the whole burden on his shoulders. As an angry young man who is waiting to clean the society, Jiiva is impressive. He seems to be getting mature as an actor with each film. But sadly the weak script lets him down here.

Shriya hogs limelight playing a meaty role. She has apparently enjoyed doing every frame of it. She is glamourous and her onscreen chemistry with Jiiva is good. Prakash Raj as usual pulls it off convincingly doing a cameo.

Jayaprakash and Lakshmi play dotting parents, while Ganesh Acharya, a popular Bollywood choreographer, has been wasted in a mindless role. A song featuring him is impressive. Prakash Niki's music is foot-tapping while other technical departments are okay.

Produced by R B Choudhary, 'Rowthiram', which runs for more than two-and-half hours, chronicles the anger, agony and frustration of a young man. Gokul seems to have done his best in the first half. But a swift screenplay especially in the second half would have made a world of difference.

It is going to be a treat for film buffs when August draws to an end and right through the coming months with the most expected films of 2011 starring the top heroes in Tamil lining up for release!

Cheran is continuing his journey as an actor with 'Muran' where he will share screen space with Prasanna. Directed by newcomer Rajjan Madhav the film has been inspired from the Alfred Hitchcock's film 'Strangers On A Train.' With modern Chennai as the backdrop the film is about two strangers meeting and what fate has in store for them from then on.

The rushes of 'Muran' which were released when 'Rowthiram' was released have been garnering appreciation for the way the film has been shot as well as for its music. The tunes for 'Muran' are by Sajjan Madhav the director's sibling and son of late Malayalam musician Ravindran.

Cheran will play a popular musician in Muran and Prasanna will be seen as a rich entrepreneur. The actor has slimmed down and lost a good amount of flab and looks lean and trendy to suit his character in this film. 'Muran' sees Nikita Tukral (the "Kodanu Kodi" girl from 'Saroja') and Haripriya as the protagonists' female leads. Jai Prakash has an important role to perform in this psychological thriller film, reveal insiders.

'Muran' is jointly produced by director Cheran's Dream Theatres and UTV Motion Pictures. The film is gearing up for release in theatres across the state on September 1, right after Ajith's game 'Mankatha' which will hit theatres on August 31!

Kollywood has a greater fascination for films with romantic genres. Since time immemorial in Tamil cinema, romance has been the favourite for many filmmakers. In 'Yuvan Yuvathi', GNR Kumaravelu has woven a script that oozes with romance.

More of a marriage between 'Vinnaithandi Varuvaya' and 'Kushi', 'Yuvan Yuvathi' has been shot stylishly in Seychelles. Bharath plays a romantic young boy while newcomer Rima Kaleengal dons the role of the female lead.

Though the story is pretty familiar, S Ramakrishnan with his dialogues makes it interesting, trendy and updated. And with Santhanam around with his catchy one-liners, 'Yuvan Yuvathi' proceeds well in most parts.

Kathirvel Murugan (Bharath) is a software engineer in Chennai. He shares his room with friend Sakkarai (Santhanam). Kathir hails from Usilampatti but wants to project him as city-bred and his ambition is to settle in USA. Kathir's father Sevaka Pandian (Sampathraj) is against his son's attitude. An influential local chieftain, he is against inter-caste marriage and love. Kathir meets Nisha (Rima Kaleengal), who too wants to go abroad. The latter loses her passport and Kathir helps her find it.

Slowly Kathir falls for her. Meanwhile, Sevaka Pandian arranges for his son's wedding with a High Court judge's daughter. In the meantime, Kathir and Nisha get their visa and get ready to leave together for USA.

The former thinks that he has escaped from his marriage and when he wants to propose to Nisha, he gets a rude shock. She informs him that she is going to USA for her marriage. What happens after this forms the rest of the plot.

Bharath is as usual bubbly on screen. His new hair-do and smart looks are impressive; he has action, romance and comedy to do in the movie. He strikes the right chord with his dancing skills as well. Rima Kaleengal is simple but sweet. She suits the character well. She reminds one of Navya Nair in many places.

Santhanam walks way with applause with his witty one-liners. His humour helps us to be engrossed. 'Five Star' fame Krishna plays a cameo. Watch out for Sampathraj. He is at his best in a complex role.

S Ramakrishnan's dialogues liven up the proceedings. Cinematographer Kovi Jagatheeswaran captures the beauty of Seychelles well.  Vijay Antony's music is as usual racy...
