Mendel90 with lasercut MDF frame and acrylic enclosure

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 26 Oktober 2013 0 komentar
This looks cool. Maybe I'll find a laser cutter (which is not the easiest task in rural Croatia) in the future and try to build it. I wonder what are the heat retention impacts on print quality ...

From project description:
A modified version of the Mendel90 which uses a lasercut melamine coated MDF frame (same fixing idea as the graber i3 frame). It allows an acrylic enclosure to be fitted.
Main changes:
Frame re-designed, Z axis changed to laser cut parts.
Some plastic parts modified (not many)
Acrylic enclosure added
Wiring simplified - all motors have detachable plugs, endstops are push fit. this allows for a wiring loom to be used.
RAMPS electronics as standard with the Panelolu2 controller.
All the detail is available on our blog:
http://blog.think3dprint3d.com/2013/09/mendel90-laser-cut-ready-to-print.html
The assembly process in more detail in in this post:http://blog.think3dprint3d.com/2013/10/mendel90-lasercut-overview.html
The commissioning and calibration in outline is here:
http://blog.think3dprint3d.com/2013/10/mendel90-lasercut-calibration.html
The printer is designed from the start to take multiple bowden extruders as an alternative to a single direct drive extruder. Updates will follow!

From the source:

Scientists have channeled their inner shoe designer for this latest project – and just in time for Spring Racing Carnival.
In a horse-ome titanium 3D printing first, our scientists have scanned a race horse’s hooves using a handheld scanner and then, with sophisticated modelling software they designed the perfect fitting, lightweight racing shoe.
Four of the customized kicks were printed within only a few hours!
“3D printing a race horse shoe from titanium is a first for scientists and demonstrates the range of applications the technology can be used for, although it’s certainly very different from our everyday work,” said our titanium expert, John Barnes.

3Dsimo - multimaterial 3d drawing pen

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

From the 3Dsimo project Indiegogo page:

3Dsimo as a first on the world provides to user the possibility to choose print options on a digital display. The adjustability of temperature and speed of materials throughput now offer amazing opportunities for your creativity. We can handle various materials as ABS, PLA, PVA (water-soluble material), nylon at different temperatures in order to achieve fast filling or even print in the air.
Other options include backlight, turn on preheating or memory for storing settings. These parameters are used to determine the appropriate method of drawing.
Do not be limited by the choice of materials, for example choose between golden, silver, wooden or flexible PLA. Over time, new materials will be increasing due to the growing trend of 3D printing. Our 3Dsimo is fully prepared for this due to configurability of all parameters and thermal feedback for determining the exact temperature.
How it works?
3Dsimo is so simple to use as a pencil. Everyone who have ever draw with pencil will not have a problem to use 3Dsimo. After plugging it in you set the desired speed and temperature according to the material (these data will be appended together with 3Dsimo and new materials will be updated). 3Dsimo is based on the principle of FDM technology thus extruding plastic material through the hot end. If you want to print into the air or create infill of any object you can do it easily and quickly. There is no problem just make your choice. After a while of use you will find that with 3Dsimo you can create fantastic objects.
3Dsimo has many utilization:
Repairing of plastic devices
Bonding and assembling models of 3D printers
Repair abortive print (due to repair you don’t need to enter new several hours lasting print)
Creating jewelry
To implement your ideas
Simply for the joy of modeling

Skull shaped microscopic 3d printed bacterial cages

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
From the source:
By caging bacteria in microscopic houses, scientists at The University of Texas at Austin are studying how communities of bacteria, such as those found in the human gut and lungs, interact and develop infections.
In a recent experiment they demonstrated that a community of Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause some skin infections, became more resistant to antibiotics when it was contained within a larger community of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria involved in various diseases, including cystic fibrosis.
The work was published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The researchers use a novel 3-D printing technology to build homes for bacteria at a microscopic level. Their method uses a laser to construct protein "cages" around bacteria in gelatin. The resulting structures can be of almost any shape or size, and can be moved around in relationship to other structures containing bacterial microcommunities.
The method should enable an entirely new class of experiments that better approximate the conditions that bacteria encounter in actual biological environments, such as those in the human body.

3d printed arrow fletcher

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
There are many 3d printing projects in the field of archery. This 3d printed arrow fletcher has very organic and futuristic design.

From project page:

Where is the future of 3D printed product design headed and why? Niche and pricy markets like arrow fletchers may see the soonest market disruption. A good arrow fletcher holds feathers accurately and securely in place while glue dries. This fletcher was printed and delivered at the market price of current ones.
A helical twist in the feathers create arrows with better stability in flight, but helical fletchers are generally more difficult to manufacture, leading to very few that can fletch 3 feathers simultaneously. Instead of designing products with simple extrusions and assemblies of stamped parts, this fletcher asks where forces are actually needed, and how they can be satisfied with the least.
Depending on an archer's handedness and set up, different twists are required. Instead of buying the only fletcher that meets your requirements, you can select “18.5 Degree Twist, Clockwise Rotation, 12lb Glue Pressure, Style 2”,through a customizer such as OpenSCAD and click “print”.

23 springs, yet only four parts. By understanding the elasticity of the material, we can create products which clamp and stretch and bend in predictable ways without adding more parts to assemble. Freedom from draft angle or such other constrictions allows these shortcuts to be used more freely than they have been in the past.
To use:

  • An arrow nock is snapped into the base
  • Squeezing the arms allows feathers to slide in, glue is applied
  • The arms click into the base and are folded up
  • The arms snap - with audible satisfaction - onto any diameter of aluminum arrow
  • The feathers are now secure, and the glue is left to dry
