Small example of 3d printing changing the traditional supply and sale chain of plastic stuff

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 07 Januari 2014 0 komentar
Great post on BoingBoing illustrating disruptive potential to traditional supply chain by 3d printing technology. It is also a small case study how physical objects can behave as digital objects.

Basically, someone on internet said:

I need this plastic replacement part, but it is incredibly expensive!

Few hours later, complete stranger sent him .stl file to 3d print that part.

Truly revolutionary!

On separate note, there are two additional things to think about here:

  1. if you run a company with business model based on sale of overpriced small plastic parts, maybe it is time to think it over
  2. if you want to be a (rich) lawyer, you should start researching 3d printing

From the source article:
Back in April, a redditor complained that a simple plastic cable-comb (used to bundle cables) was too expensive at $45. Later that day, WillySF modelled a printable cable comb and linked to the shape files (1, 2). It's a bit of a futuristic moment, no?
Saw the cable comb on Amazon with prime shipping
Model picture of the item in question:

3d printer installed in the electric Renault Zoe car

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 21 November 2013 0 komentar
The leFabShop crew from France decided to showcase 3d printer installed in an alectric car to demonstrate how some future repairman could 3d print replacement parts in his vehicle.
I don't know how would such setup be stabilized to compensate for car vibration road bumps, acceleration, breaking etc. but if there is a demand there will be a solution.

We believe that in a near future, cars will be electric, self-driven & equipped for advanced field operations. Your plumber will be able to produce spare-parts in his vehicle, some goods will be produced on demand in the delivery truck.

3d printer in your trunk - it's like a replicator on Enterprise - you don't need to carry anything with you EVER!

The electric car featured in this video is Renault Zoe and Renault has some crazy scheme where they rent you the battery for it ... I'm loosing faith in electric cars ... bu that is a different topic ...
You can see the review of Zoe in the video bellow jut to get idea what it is. For you USA natives, YES cars in Europe are generally much smaller.

3D printed DIY replacement parts - replacement Jawbone Up cap

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 10 November 2013 0 komentar
Here is another example of DIY 3d printable replacement part, this time for popular personal activity / fitness tracker Jawbone Up.
The cap can be lost or broken and someone designed replacement cap (with their logo on it). Retail price of the original part is around 10 $ + shipping, so printing it can save huge percent of that cost.
It shows how home 3d printing can change economics of replacement parts and raises some questions about IP rights. Since I'm sure that this trend of DIY replacement parts will continue  I wonder what will be the response from the corporate manufacturers and design IP rights owners.

Files can be downloaded here (I think that the advertisement logo can easily be replaced or removed):

If you don't know what Jawbone Up is, here is a review:

Video showing PLA 3d printed replacement part for small air compressor. It is some sort of high speed rotational suction / turbine for pushing air to cool the engine block.
There are no details ... I would like to see more ... if the claim of the video is valid it is great example of usefulness of  3d printers in everyday usage ...

Future of 3d printing replacment car parts

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 22 September 2013 0 komentar

Big companies probably won't allow printing of parts that could endanger car passengers safty if they fail because of liability issues, but will probably allow printing of  "cosmetic" parts and non-essential structures.
Maybe there will be secondary / grey market ... car parts can be expensive ... or hard to obtain in certain situations ...
