faBrickation 3d printing with volume replaced wth Lego blocks by Hasso Plattner Institute

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 31 Januari 2014 0 komentar

faBrickation a new approach to rapid prototyping of functional objects, such as the body of a head-mounted display. The key idea is to save 3D printing time by automatically substituting sub-volumes with standard building blocks — in our case Lego bricks.
When making the body for a head-mounted display, for example, getting the optical path right is paramount. Users thus mark the lens mounts as “high-resolution” to indicate that these should later be 3D printed. faBrickator then 3D prints these parts. It also generates instructions that show users how to create everything else from Lego bricks.
If users iterate on the design later, faBrickator offers even greater benefit as it allows re-printing only the elements that changed. We validated our system at the example of three 3D models of functional objects. On average, our system fabricates objects 2.44 times faster than traditional 3D printing while requiring only 14 minutes of manual assembly.

printGREEN 3d printer from Slovenia

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 18 Januari 2014 0 komentar
Can you guess with what material is this printGREEN 3d printer from Slovenia printing?

The material is mixture of water, fertile soil and seeds. After some time, seeds sprout and plants start to grow. It is a sort of design art  project but I think this technology could be used in some agricultural or gardening machinery.

The team behind this project:Maja Petek, Tina Zidanšek, Urška Skaza, Danica Rženičnik and Simon Tržan. They worked with assistant professor Dušan Zidar to develop it. The original name in Slovenian is “Tiskaj ZELENO”.
Project homepage:

http://tiskajzeleno.wix.com/tiskaj-zeleno#!printgreen/c4nw

On personal note: Slovenians are our dear neighbors and I had several technology, art and DIY workshops with them. They have cool art-tech scene and are pretty chill crowd to hang out with.

Here is another cool project from Slovenia:

New Polypropylene based food-safe 3d printing filament by GermanRepRap

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 17 Januari 2014 0 komentar
Polypropylene (PP) filament is semi-crystalline thermoplastics which is produced according to US FDA regulations and the relevant EU standards. Basically, it is made so you can print plates, cups, beakers, food containers, spoons and other food serving utensils.
This filament can be used with all printers that have a 3mm hotend and it comes in black color (very appetizing color). 2,1kg spool is priced at 99,95 euro and the 750g spool is priced at 54,95 euro.
Now, maybe the material itself is food safe, however, when you push it trough the hot extruder and deposit it two food un-safe things could happen:
  1. The 3d printed object could have small (micro) pores where bacteria could develop and get into your food
  2. You could get some heavy metals residue from your brass hot end.
The topic of food safety and 3d printed thermoplastics should be researched further, I don't think that we will see much 3d printing for everyday food containers on regular basis. Probably the most people will use it as novelty gimmicky thing.

Still, it is good to see that food related filament technology is advancing.

RepRap Tuga non-Cartesian 3d printer from Portugal

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 12 Januari 2014 0 komentar
Paulo Gonçalves from Portugal developed an interesting cool-looking non-Cartesian 3d printer: the RepRap Tuga. I hope we will get more details soon, detailed build guide and successful prints! Kudos Paulo!

From Tuga description:
A couple of months ago I was sourcing parts to build a Delta printer and while I was doing I realized that I would prefer to have a big horizontal print area instead of a vertical one, so the concept for RepRap Tuga was born.
This concept should respond to this points:
  • Static motor arrangement
  • Speed of movements (X and Y)
  • Big horizontal build volume (rectangular 400x180mm)
  • Bellow 500€ cost
The resulting printer dimensions are aprox. 830x500x500mm
Some Weak points:
  • Large horizontal printer size (double of the print bed).
  • No heatbed for the first version
  • Possible x/y axis wobble
  • Arms mechanism untested in this arrangement.
Future Design Goals:
  • Small version (250x120mm print bed)
  • Try Vslots
  • Replace side acrylic panels with printed ones (maybe prints holds to a wall)
  • Put both horizontal carriages using the same smooth rods.

Advancements in nano scale 3d printing by Jan Torgersen of TU Wien

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 11 Januari 2014 0 komentar
It is not 3d printing if it 's not nano scale 3d printing.

From video description:
After his studies in mechanical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology, Jan Torgersen started his phd work at the Insitute of Materials Science and Technology. Jan's field is Additive Manufacturing Technologies; the technology involved in 3D printing. He developed a new printer that is able to produce nano-scaled objects suitable for numerous applications in photonics, surface modifications and biomedical engineering. This printer is currently the fastest of its kind and brings the technology closer to industrial applications. How it works got illustrated recently by a video that went around the world, showing the construction of a racing car model in the scale of a human hair.
In the video, a race car with dimensions of 330x130x100µm3 is fabricated. The structure consists of 100 layers, each made of an average of 200 polymer lines. It is finished in 4 minutes and resembles the CAD file at a precision of ±1µm.

RappiDelta Jr. low cost simple delta 3d printer

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 03 Januari 2014 0 komentar

From Kickstarter page:
Rather than mechanical endstops the RappiDelta Jr. utilises slotted optical sensors which prove more repeatable homing and ultimately better prints. One of my stretch goals is to be able to offer auto bed leveling to further enhance the functionality and ease of use.
The remainder of the mechanical parts can be assembled quickly and easily with a couple of hex keys.
Once assembled the printer can print on a 17cm diameter circle and up to 17cm tall. These dimensions have been chosen based on my experience of what is actually reasonable to print as well as being based on a similar size to other entry level printers. In future you can increase the build volume by using longer uprights, and if required longer delta arms. The basic model has no bed heater and as such is limited to printing PLA (this is actually my preferred plastic!) but other options are available to allow the printing of ABS and other plastics that need bed heating. There is also an option to have an SD Card reader and LCD control panel to allow printing without a PC, something that I have found invaluable when developing my prints as it allows on the fly adjustments.
This delta projects wants to deliver cheap simple printer, with few easily assembled printable frame parts.

Detailed construction manual and all the files needed:

http://www.instructables.com/id/DeltaTrix-3D-Printer/?ALLSTEPS

DeltaTrix has sturdy CNC cut full wood frame construction

DeltaTrix print results

There are some similar detailed build guides for Delta printers like this one if you are interested in building different model:

http://diy3dprinting.blogspot.com/2013/09/extensive-roctock-delta-building.html

Update:

It is on Kickstarter now:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1142241325/deltatrix-3d-printer-open-source-and-fully-hackabl

Technical specifications described in Kickstarter campaign:
The theoretical printing area is 280mm (11 inch) in diameter. As a square this works out as (almost) 200x200mm (8"x8"), which suits the used 'MK2A' heated bed. As it is also useful to be able to remove items, the gap between the uprights is just over 295mm. The maximum build height is around 280mm (11").
Main features:
  • Linear delta robot layout provides a mechanically simple motion platform for moving the print head only, not the workpiece.
  • Using a LCD display and SD memory card (supplied in our kits), the DeltaTrix 3D Printer can operate on it's own. It does not need to be attached to a computer.
  • There are several (Open Source) options in terms of software. At the moment we are using Repetier on the PC, a modified version of Marlin as the firmware on the RAMPS electronics, and the standard Arduino IDE for tweaking the firmware.
  • A heated bed with glass print surface, allows for PLA and ABS to be used as filament.
  • In terms of filament, the DeltaTrix 3D Printer is designed to accept 1.75mm PLA and ABS on a variety of 1kg reels, as long as it is of good quality.
  • Igus linear slides with pretension are used, providing a robust and durable bearing solution from a highly reputable manufacturer. The strengthening ribs on the uprights keep the rails straight and sturdy.
  • The current design print head assembly uses a single Reprappro Hot End, with a nozzle size of 0.3 or 0.5mm. The assembly also has a fan and integrated duct for cooling the top of a print.
  • Quick changeover print head assembly. Useful for swapping between two print head assemblies, eg. one for ABS and one for PLA. The prototypes use connection blocks, but the kit will have proper connectors. Please, note: the standard kit only contains parts for one off print head assembly.

Advantages of a timing belt driven Z-axis:
Most 3D printer systems use a lead screw or a threaded rod as drive for the Z-axis. Backlash and imbalance cause errors in X- and Y-direction when moving the Z-axis. These errors are visible as vertical pattern on the printed object.
When using two timing belts as attachment for the Z-axis these errors can cleverly be avoided. Consequently the Z-axis is nearly error free, thus the layers of a printed object lie perfectly on top of each other.

There will be single and dual extruder versions, currently they are on pre-order: First delivery in February 2014.

3D RTP v450 - first 3d printing real time processor from Denmark

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 17 Desember 2013 0 komentar
Create it REAL are research and development company from Denmark focused on 3d printing. They just released 3D RTP v450 the worlds first 3d printing real time processor.  The specification look interesting and it is a sign that the technology is moving forward. I am generally suspicious of companies who develop processing hardware who also develop DRM / control technology which limits users access, since Create IT REAL also developed technology which prevents 3d printing of weapons.

http://3dprintingindustry.com/2013/07/02/create-it-real-stops-3dp-guns-from-becoming-real/

Usually gun control or pornography control is precursor to various controls of intellectual property rights which limit the hardware usability and enforce various payment schemes.
It goes without saying that it is still to be seen how it will work in realistic conditions and independently tested.

From the company press release:
Create it REAL, a Danish 3D printing technology provider is pleased to announce the first worldwide 3D printing real time processor. After 2 years of research and developments, our team have succeeded in producing a range of chips that are going to boost the 3D printer industry.
Speed is the key breakthrough - the 3D RTP v450 can reach up to 450mm/sec which is some three times faster than typical desktop printers on the market today. 3D printer manufacturers will be able to solve the speed issue - which is blocking market adoption - without changing current designs and mechanics.
The chips are initially targeting Fused Filament Fabrication printers, but are also ready to support SLA technology (Stereolithography) and will support SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) in a near future.
Create it REAL partners will appreciate the ease of integration in their current range of printers. Using only the 3D RTP chip (installed on a standard dim socket), or the full motherboard including all the controllers for the different printer parts, OEMs will be able to release new versions of their products quickly.
Finally, Create it REAL also offers an optional intuitive software to print 3D files, optimized to take advantage of all the features included in the 3DRTP chip. If needed, OEMs can get a complete tailor-made package to meet their exact needs and make sure they offer unique value to their customers.

“Our objective is to support all the 3D printer players, from small start-ups up to large OEMs, and to offer them easy to integrate, state-of-the-art technologies so they can spend their time and resources on their most important assets: their customers” says Jeremie Pierre Gay, Create it REAL’s CEO.

Key Features Summary

• Worldwide first 3D printing real time processor

• Boost 3D printers speed up to 450mm/sec

• 3 different versions to address the different market needs from desktop to high-end

• Improved print quality thanks to smoother X,Y,Z (simultaneous control)

• Integrated temperature control for optimum filament extrusion

• Supports 3 motors, up to 2 extruders, 1 heated bed, 2 fans and 6 limit switches (start/end positions)

• Create it REAL’s Motherboard also includes an innovative semi-automatic calibration mode to quickly set up the printer

The development kit will be available end-January 2014 for 3D printer manufacturers eager to integrate Create it REAL technologies into their products.

RAMPS v1.4.2 open source control board

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 10 Desember 2013 0 komentar
RAMPS version 1.4.2 open source controller electronics board is available.

From product page (google translated from German):

The new RAMPS 1.4.2 promises significantly fewer failures and has other improvements , such as 2 motor connections per socket or a labeling slots . The RepRap Arduino Mega Pololu Shield (short: RAMPS ) is the centerpiece of a RepRap 3D printer . On the board there are all electronic components such as mosfets transistors , fuses, plug-in connections for the Pololu stepper motor drivers, etc. Previous versions of the shelf had the problem that the electronics are often failed.

The RAMPS 1.4.2 is equipped with automotive fuses instead of the usual thermal fuse now. These new backups are less sensitive to heating . In order to enhance availability, the strength of the traces of 35 microns were increased to 70 microns and its course optimized. The limit switches now have a capacitor that prevents accidental turn off .

Further improvements can be found at the bases for the Pololu motor driver . You have the RAMPS 1.4.2 through two ports and can use it to drive two motors per connection . There is now a slot for external reset, which has advantages when the RAMPS is installed in an enclosure , since you do not have to do without the reset button . By labels on the slots for a warmed bed , fan and extruder also the wiring is simple .

Our RAMPS 1.4.2 is of course open source. The board is a fork of the open-source project of ultimachine / Ramps 1.4 ( https://github.com/GermanRepRap/Ramps-1.4.2 ) and retrieve in Github .

It can be applied to all RepRap 3D printer with RAMPS electronics, such as the PRotos V2, use and runs on RAMPS 1.3 and 1.4 firmware with no change , so it can easily be exchanged for existing RAMPS .

The following connections are provided:

2 * extruder heating
1 bed * Heating
3 * Temperature sensor for Extruder 2 and 1 bed ( No more board longer necessary )
5 * for Pololu motor base
6 * opto end stop (3 * Min, Max 3 * )
1 * Connection option for SD card reader and LCD
1 * Connection for external reset
1 * Connection for FAN adapter.

Mobile phone 3d scanner application by ETH Zurich

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Technology developed by ERH Zurich enables you to use your smartphone as 3d scanner. It is patent pending and not yet available for general public, but it shows a general direction of technology. There are probably development teams and investors crying now since it could make specialized hardware 3d scanners obsolete.

From source page:

Today the Computer Vision and Geometry Lab of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich, Switzerland) announced on December 3, 2013 recent research results turning a normal smartphone into a mobile 3D scanner. 3D scanning aims to capture the geometry of the 3D world, however most existing solutions require a complicated setup, are often hard to use and might not always work outdoors. The technology was demonstrated publicly for the first time today at the International Conference on Computer Vision in Sydney, Australia.
Instead of taking a normal photograph, a user simply moves the phone around the object of interest and after a few motions, a 3D model appears on the screen. As the user keeps moving, additional images are recorded automatically and used to extend the 3D model. As all calculations are performed directly on the phone, the user gets immediate feedback and can select additional viewpoints to cover missing parts of the 3D model. This is an important advantage compared to solutions that batch process all the images in the cloud at a later time.
The app also makes it possible to visualize the state of the 3D scan from different viewing angles, allowing the user to cover all the areas of the object he is interested in. Having a solution on a mobile phone enables the acquisition of 3D scans on-the-fly anywhere. Our approach works in a wide variety of settings, including low-light conditions such as inside a museum. A user can capture a 3D model of a museum piece and interactively study it at home later. After reviewing the model, a user might decide to upload his 3D data to a cloud service to further refine the results.
By using the inertial sensors of the phone, the scanning process can be made simple, intuitive and robust. After the 3D capture is started, the system automatically determines the correct moments to extract camera images based on the user motion.
Contrary to image-only 3D capture solutions the app is able to determine the absolute size of the scanned 3D object, as well as the vertical direction. Because of the complexity of the calculations needed to reconstruct hundreds of thousands of points, the graphics co-processor (GPU) of the phone is used to enable a faster reconstruction and increase interactivity for the user.
The technology also allows the 3D capture of faces, giving a third dimension to portraits, profile pictures or images of loved ones.
Having a convenient way of getting 3D models of everyday objects, users will now be able to copy real-world objects by scanning a full 360 degree model of an object. The resulting 3D model can be used for visualization or augmented reality applications, or even be used for 3D printing, potentially at a remote location, effectively enabling the user to replicate an object.
The patent pending technology was developed exclusively by ETH Zurich and can run on a wide range of current smartphones.
