3D printed organic chair is bound together using a mixture of plaster and sugar with sake

There is no detailed information HOW he did it, but Daniel Widrig managed to 3d print a chair by using a mixture of plaster and sugar with sake. It was commissioned as part of an art exhibition.

Reverberating Across the Divide reconnects digital and physical contexts through a custom chronomorphologic modeling environment. The modeling interface uses a three phase workflow (3D scanning, 3D modeling, and 3D printing) to enable a designer to craft intricate digital geometries around pre-existing physical contexts.
Chronomorphology –– like its nineteenth-century counterpart chronophotography –– is a composite recording of an object’s movement. Instead of a photograph, however, the recording medium here is a full three-dimensional model of the object — a virtual creature simulated within a digital environment. This virtual creature exists as a 3D printable module; it is constructed as a closed mesh, with a spring skeleton that prevents self-intersections. The composite, chronomorphologic model (of the virtual creature over time) retains these printable properties at each time-step. Therefore, no matter how intricate or complex, the digital geometry will always be exported as a valid, 3D printable mesh.

The chronomorphologic modeling environment facilitates the rapid generation of baroque and expressive spatial forms that both respond and expand on existing physical contexts. By mediating 3D scanning and 3D printing through the modeling environment, the designer has a streamlined workflow for oscillating between virtual and analog environments. This ease between digital design and physical production provides a framework for rapidly exploring how subtle changes in the virtual environment, physical environment, or designer’s gestures can create dynamic variation in the formal, material, and spatial qualities of a generated design.

3D printing rubber inflatable complex structures (the flower blossom was probably not the first)

At Victoria University of Wellington's School of Design, Richard Clarkson 3D printed these complex flower shaped objects from a soft rubber multimaterials that are inflatable and adapt to air pressure.




Recent advances in 3D printing now allow the simultaneous deposition of different build materials in a single print. In a similar way to nature, materials can be distributed seamlessly within objects for structural and functional advantage. “Blossom” explores the blending of two materials with varying physical properties transitioning from flexible to rigid. The variation offers an opportunity to generate complex forms and dynamic structures that are impossible to make by any other means. The research into applications of these Digital Materials™ has resulted in what is believed to be the world’s first inflatable 3D print. Forcing air into the cavities of the print causes it to ‘bloom’ and thereby reveal the complexity of its physical structure.

I wanted to check the claim that it was the worlds first air inflatable 3d printed rubber object. On youtube I found this video published in September of 2013 that shows something that looks like layer 3d printed rubber inflatable object that has a system of chambers to manipulate the shape and vibration pattern by applying pressure.

printGREEN 3d printer from Slovenia

Can you guess with what material is this printGREEN 3d printer from Slovenia printing?



The material is mixture of water, fertile soil and seeds. After some time, seeds sprout and plants start to grow. It is a sort of design art  project but I think this technology could be used in some agricultural or gardening machinery.

The team behind this project:Maja Petek, Tina Zidanšek, Urška Skaza, Danica Rženičnik and Simon Tržan. They worked with assistant professor Dušan Zidar to develop it. The original name in Slovenian is “Tiskaj ZELENO”.

On personal note: Slovenians are our dear neighbors and I had several technology, art and DIY workshops with them. They have cool art-tech scene and are pretty chill crowd to hang out with.

Object steganography method to hide data in shape of 3d printed objects

Ingenious and cool process designed by Noah Feehan of hiding data in 3d printed object. Shape itself can then be scanned for information to be extracted and decrypted.

Physical object IS encrypted data carrier, carrying it in its shape. I could not find more detailed or software itself, however concept is intriguing and deserves attention and further exploration.

Steganography is the practice of concealing one form of information within the properties of another; it has been used as a way of hiding information in plain sight for thousands of years.
“Object Steganography” is a series of parametrically-designed 3d printed objects: the shape of each piece is determined by a user-submitted word.
For example, one of the objects pictured here is the most common password in the world; the other is an illegal number.
Further work in this series will close the loop between computer fabrication and computer vision: Each object will be scanned back into a programming environment and decoded.

3d printing with beeswax

Two Dutch designers, Olivier van Herpt and Joris van Tubergen, developed an open source extruder that can be used for printing with beeswax. Using this extruder anyone can create temporary disposable objects out of beeswax on their desktop 3D printers. Beeswax has a relatively low melting point range of 62 to 64 °C. Once it has been extruded in a desired shape, the beeswax hardens. The 3D printed beeswax products are completely natural, made with the help of bees, with no artificial color, no artificial scent.

It is more of an "art" project, but it could be used in some biology related or food safe 3d printing projects.

Euclid is 3d printer developed by Zachary Schoch. It has very large print area at some 1m X 1m X 1m or 44” x 44” x 48”.

Project Egg is about 3D printing, the power of Sharing and Co Creating, about new ways to create and collaborate.
Project Egg is a spacious building, consisting of 4760 stones. All stones are unique. They have to be 3D-printed one by one.
Once collected, all of these stones, placed in the exact order, give birth to this building.
The outcome of Project Egg, one of the first 3D printed buildings is first to be shown in Milan during the Furniture Fair in April 2014. After that it will hopefully travel around the world.
Everyone with a desktop 3D is invited to print one stone. This way, the printing community can be seen as a kind of a new and widely spread factory.
All people that sympathize with the project can be of importance too.

Break the Mold documentary

Break the Mould documentary from 3dify on Vimeo.

Documentary following the project Break the Mould - an interactive 3D scanning and printing art installation that took place during the Brighton Digital Festival 2013. The scanner was housed inside a giant willow sculpture to give participants the experience of stepping inside a giant womb where they were 3D scanned and then printed out as 8cm high figures on Ultimaker 3D printers.

3Dify built the 3D scanner using a rig of their own design, an Xbox360 and Skanect. The rig rotated around the person at various heights and was controlled using an arduino and piloted using a retro 80's joystick.

Students: Miguel Guerrero Pinar, Anastasia Pistofidou, Chryssa Karakana, Carolina Miro
This video shows the fabrication process of solidifying sand piles and our experiments to define the rules of the binder deposition, in this case it is white glue. By attaching a customized board with two nozzles, one for sand and the other for glue deposition on the shopbot, we made our first primitive model of Fabbot. the idea is to use a material found on site, cheap and plentiful, take advantage of its physical rules and character, to generate easily fabricated structures with a wide range in scale. the generation of the structure is indicated both by the site specificity and the digital manipulation of the form through programming. The coordinates are taken from processing and translated into the g-code of the shopbot. There is a direct connection with grasshopper, using Ghowl plug-in to design the structures in Rhino.

From DIY 3d printing history 1 - Silicone 3d printer from 2003 with rotating cylindrical surface

3D printer that deposits silicone layers based on Illustrator drawings to produce printed shapes. It has cylindrical rotating surface as build platform which allows it to print shapes impossible to print on flat surface. It is hard to find further technical information on this machine, so if anybody knows more, let me know.

Construction of bamboo geodesic dome with 3d printed connectors

Assembly of a geodesic dome made with bamboo and a 3D printer from colaborativa.
This is a timelapse video of the assembly of a geodesic dome made with bamboo and a RepRap 3D Printer. The prototype was assembled for the first time in Scarpia XII (http://scarpia2013.blogspot.com.es) on July, 2013. The experimental design is based on the work of Buckminster Fuller, domerama.com, effalo and Colaborativa's own designs and it is shared with a creative commons license.

3d printing is very useful for production of geodesic connectors and hubs. I think that there is still lot of space left for much more innovation and improvements (ie. connectors for square boards etc.) .
