Technology of 3d scanners is exploding together with the developments in 3d printing machines. Fuel3d is one of more high-end scanner that is much expected to reach the market.

Here is what company claims are main advantages of Fuel3d against competitor technologies:
  • Turntable: The most basic and lowest cost 3D scanning systems use laser point or line projection onto an object positioned and rotated on a turntable. Prices range from a few hundred dollars up to low thousands. As a handheld solution, Fuel3D holds a significant flexibility advantage over these systems, as they are fixed position and the object being scanned is limited by turntable size.
  • Sweeping laser line: To enable scanning of larger objects, scanners are available that project a laser line, which sweeps across a stationary subject. With a few exceptions, prices for these technologies are typically in the $20,000 – $50,000 range. Fuel3D has a very strong price advantage over all these systems, with the added benefit of handheld flexibility and color capture.
  • Hand-held: 3D scanning systems have been developed to enable maximum scan flexibility for working around objects of almost any shape and size. Prices of hand-held solutions are now as low as $15,000 – $30,000. In addition to Fuel3D being much less expensive, we are not aware of any of these handheld systems that collect color data in addition to 3D geometry.
  • Microsoft Kinect: Some low-cost handheld scanning solutions are being developed using the Microsoft Kinect platform. These systems are typically quite low-resolution resolution, so while they are good for capturing environments, they do not have the data precision or resolution for detailed object capture like Fuel3D.












Claiming things for marketing is usual, but, as always, more real-life thir party testing is needed.


The Fuel3D scanner is priced from 1,250 USD without shipping costs or taxes. Estimated shipping start is in September of 2014.

SoftKinetic advanced 3d scanning technology and MekerBot partnership

They 3d scan object by measuring time that the light travels from object to sensor. The technology is called "time-of-flight" technology and it is now implemented by some cutting edge technology companies (like xBox sensor). So, in the future, we can expect better 3d scanning devices and more gesture control in design and human interface to 3d printers.

3d Systems on CES 2014: they came, they presented and they won

I was never fan of 3D Systems corporate style of marketing, but they DOMINATED the CES 2014 with technology! They presented many new products and technologies and started to remove barriers between high end and prosumer 3d printing machines with CubeJet sub 5000$ jet 3d printer.
Kudos to you 3D Systems! and please PLEASE drop this crazy proprietary cartridges scheme. Let user have some freedom. I think most users hate that.
They seem light years ahead of Stratasys-MakerBot team who showed only different sized Replicators.

Technology developed by ERH Zurich enables you to use your smartphone as 3d scanner. It is patent pending and not yet available for general public, but it shows a general direction of technology. There are probably development teams and investors crying now since it could make specialized hardware 3d scanners obsolete.

Today the Computer Vision and Geometry Lab of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich, Switzerland) announced on December 3, 2013 recent research results turning a normal smartphone into a mobile 3D scanner. 3D scanning aims to capture the geometry of the 3D world, however most existing solutions require a complicated setup, are often hard to use and might not always work outdoors. The technology was demonstrated publicly for the first time today at the International Conference on Computer Vision in Sydney, Australia.
Instead of taking a normal photograph, a user simply moves the phone around the object of interest and after a few motions, a 3D model appears on the screen. As the user keeps moving, additional images are recorded automatically and used to extend the 3D model. As all calculations are performed directly on the phone, the user gets immediate feedback and can select additional viewpoints to cover missing parts of the 3D model. This is an important advantage compared to solutions that batch process all the images in the cloud at a later time.
The app also makes it possible to visualize the state of the 3D scan from different viewing angles, allowing the user to cover all the areas of the object he is interested in. Having a solution on a mobile phone enables the acquisition of 3D scans on-the-fly anywhere. Our approach works in a wide variety of settings, including low-light conditions such as inside a museum. A user can capture a 3D model of a museum piece and interactively study it at home later. After reviewing the model, a user might decide to upload his 3D data to a cloud service to further refine the results.
By using the inertial sensors of the phone, the scanning process can be made simple, intuitive and robust. After the 3D capture is started, the system automatically determines the correct moments to extract camera images based on the user motion.
Contrary to image-only 3D capture solutions the app is able to determine the absolute size of the scanned 3D object, as well as the vertical direction. Because of the complexity of the calculations needed to reconstruct hundreds of thousands of points, the graphics co-processor (GPU) of the phone is used to enable a faster reconstruction and increase interactivity for the user.
The technology also allows the 3D capture of faces, giving a third dimension to portraits, profile pictures or images of loved ones.
Having a convenient way of getting 3D models of everyday objects, users will now be able to copy real-world objects by scanning a full 360 degree model of an object. The resulting 3D model can be used for visualization or augmented reality applications, or even be used for 3D printing, potentially at a remote location, effectively enabling the user to replicate an object.
The patent pending technology was developed exclusively by ETH Zurich and can run on a wide range of current smartphones.

Large volume DIY 3d scanner based on 39 Raspberry Pi and Raspberry cameras

Clustered Raspberry Pies and Raspberry camera modules form this large volume full person DIY 3d scanner. They scanned hundreds of people on various events!
The setup uses 39 Raspberry Pi + camera units. They all listen to a network broadcast to fully synchronized take 39 photos. The photos are then uploaded to a local SAN for further processing.
The 3d modeling is done using the free cloud service from Autodesk called Recap (recap.autodesk.com).
There is extensive documentation available so you can build this powerful 3d scanner yourself.

Break the Mold documentary

Break the Mould documentary from 3dify on Vimeo.

Documentary following the project Break the Mould - an interactive 3D scanning and printing art installation that took place during the Brighton Digital Festival 2013. The scanner was housed inside a giant willow sculpture to give participants the experience of stepping inside a giant womb where they were 3D scanned and then printed out as 8cm high figures on Ultimaker 3D printers.

3Dify built the 3D scanner using a rig of their own design, an Xbox360 and Skanect. The rig rotated around the person at various heights and was controlled using an arduino and piloted using a retro 80's joystick.

Looks Ok. Nothing extraordinary. The price is too high in my opinion. 1400$ for spinning platform and some laser scanners...
There will be a lot of copyright issues raised with 3d scanners getting more widespread. All those action figures waiting to be scanned and shared...
Also: more and more projects are offering 3d printed with integrated 3d scanner (and other tools), MakerBot may loose it's edge here ...
