3d printing for education from 2013 to 2018

The report gives 12 new technologies that will have huge impact on education in next years. 3d printing is one of those technologies.

3D Printing

Known in industrial circles as rapid prototyping, 3D printing refers to technologies that construct
physical objects from three-dimensional (3D) digital content such as 3D modeling software, computer-aided design (CAD) tools, computer aided tomography (CAT), and X-ray crystallography.
A 3D printer builds a tangible model or prototype from the electronic file, one layer at a time, through an extrusion-like process using plastics and other flexible materials, or an inkjet-like process to spray a bonding agent onto a very thin layer of fixable powder. The deposits created by the machine can be applied very accurately to build an object from the bottom up, layer by layer, with resolutions that, even in the least expensive machines, are more than sufficient to express a large amount of detail. The process even accommodates moving parts within the object. Using different materials and bonding agents, color can be applied, and objects can be rendered in plastic, resin, metal, or even biological materials, such as tissue. The technology is commonly used in design and engineering labs to build prototypes of almost any object that can be rendered in three dimensions.

Relevance for Teaching and Learning in STEM+ Education

  • 3D printing allows for more authentic exploration of objects that may not be readily available to education institutions, including animal anatomies and toxic materials. 
  • The exploration of 3D printing, from design to production, as well as demonstrations and participatory access, can open up new possibilities for learning activities. 
  • Typically, students are not allowed to handle fragile objects like fossils and artifacts; 3D printing shows promise as a rapid prototyping and production tool, providing users with the ability to touch, hold, and even take home an accurate model.

3D printers could prove to be one of the most versatile tools that educators have to engage their students in unique and innovative projects. The rapid growth of 3D printers is a result of the open source movement, an online community of people actively sharing ideas about DIY projects in a variety of disciplines. Having a 3D printer enables someone to take their idea from concept to manufacturing with incredible precision right at their desktop.

Professor Dave Kennel first introduced me to 3D printers about three years ago. Since then, we both have utilized open source machines to create dozens of projects. Last January, Dr. Merrill, the STEM education graduate coordinator, asked Dave and I to help administer 3D printing workshops for a diverse group of teachers. The workshops were such a success that Dave and I decided to form Open Source Classroom.

Open Source Classroom is a company that specializes in training teachers about open source technologies. We accomplish this through a variety of professional development workshops including 3D printers, Arduino programming, and 3D modeling. This is a valuable service for educators because we are providing them with the tools to create new and exciting educational activities that engage their students in complex technical subjects.

In addition to our ongoing workshops, Open Source Classroom has built and published a company webpage to showcase our services in addition to our active social media presence. We have engaged in a number of online technology and educational groups to connect with our target market. After meeting with local school teachers and administrators we have already scheduled several professional development workshops.

During the planning stages of our business, Professor Kennell and I developed the 3D literacy concept to structure the components teachers need to bring these technologies into their classrooms. I have also attended several technology education conferences speaking on behalf of the business with very high interest from schools all over the state. We have tested our workshops with both students and teachers and found that even a 5th grader can build 3D printers.

As technology continues to advance, schools around the world are going to need professional development workshops to stay current. Open Source Classroom has the potential to grow beyond the educational system and open locations to provide similar services to the public. As the open source community continues to advance technology, educational institutions are struggling to find new methods to engage their students. Open Source Classroom is committed to providing teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to incorporate open source technologies into their classrooms.

When you combine the elements of 3D Literacy with creativity, the result is innovation.

TinyBoy low cost 3d printer starting from 130$

TinyBoy is an open design 3D printer. The size is just 15 x 15 x 22cm , even smaller than most of the 2D paper printer. Therefore , it fit for regular computer desk. The design aims as an entry-level machine for student and newbie to learn 3D modeling technology and train for creative thinking.

The maximum size of printed object is 8.5 x 8.5 x 8.5cm , which is relatively small than many other 3D printer. However, it is already large enough for making things like figure and toy.

The gain from the trade off is the cost down of material and maintenance. Take out components for making large printed object , the design become simple and lean. The core material is acrylic sheet and connected by metal screw. Therefore , the cost of material and building can be minimized. The expect bill of material is just around HKD $1,000/ USD $130.

Easy to build / Learning by making

The process of making has the opportunity to transform education by inviting students to be something other than consumers of education. They can be maker of anything , moving from being directed to self-directed through the process.

Tinyboy is designed for easy to build. The assemble from kit can be done by just using a screw driver. We wish student can make their own machine. Then they become a pioneer whose may make another one for other people. So that the use of 3D printer can be spread out to more student.

The case of Tinyboy uses acylic plane as the main material. Individual parts can be made by using cutter laser. Therefore, the manufacturing process is easy once you have a laser cutter. In fact , the price of an A5 laser cutter can be as cheap as USD $400. That make the cost of small amount production be reasonably low.

Tricorder project 3d printable spectometer

The prototype spectrograph is an experiment in low-cost design, and is almost entirely 3D printed using ABS plastic on an inexpensive desktop 3D printer (such as a Makerbot, though I used an ORD Bot Hadron). I have much more experience designing electronics than I do designing optical systems, and so the spectrograph is designed to be swappable/upgradable as newer designs come to pass (and I expect it to go throught a few iterations). This first spectrograph design has a 3D printed slit, and uses an inexpensive 1000-line/mm diffraction grating of the kind you can find on diffraction grating slides for classroom experiments. I read a paper a while ago on using deconvolution to post-process the data from slit spectrometers and basically sharpen the point-spread function (or PSF) to effectively increase the resolution of the instrument. Inspired by this, I decided to leave out the relay optics between slit-to-grating and from grating-to-detector to see if I could use post-processing to effectively sharpen up the overly broad PSF and have an even simpler and less expensive instrument.
The spectrograph design:
  • contains a ~0.2mm printed slit
  • 400-700nm (approx) spectral range
  • Variable spectral resolution (~3.3nm @400nm, ~1.8nm @ 700nm), not accounting for the PSF
  • 1000 line-per-mm diffraction grating (cut into a 4mm wide strip, and inserted into the spectrograph flush with the slit aperture)
  • 3D printable on an inexpensive printer
  • Very small size — about 1cm wide x 2cm long x 3cm tall.

With a spectrometer you’re often battling for SNR, and have to worry about stray light. Although these pictures don’t show it, the spectrograph has to be spray painted with a flat matte black paint to get any kind of performance.
